Orwell
Here we are blown past the the very literary year of 1984, but in many ways closer to Orwell’s vision than makes me comfortable. I ran across this on Boing Boing this morning. The Orwell Prize will be publishing years of George Orwell’s diaries in a blog format, 1 post a day. This quote was mentioned in the announcement and struck me dumb for a second:
(on Charles Dickens) ‘He is laughing, with a touch of anger in his laughter, but no triumph, no malignity. It is the face of a man who is always fighting against something, but who fights in the open and is not frightened, the face of a man who is generously angry — in other words, of a nineteenth-century liberal, a free intelligence, a type hated with equal hatred by all the smelly little orthodoxies which are now contending for our souls.”
