I am studying Ingress and its players for my doctoral dissertation and need your help! If you are a player or have ever been one, please participate in my study by taking this survey. The Ren Fair is Back in So Cal This Weekend

While watching them setup I had a thought about mashing up #ingress  and temporary events like the Ren Fair.

It seems like a win/win proposition for the Ren Fair to team up with the Niantic Project to open up a series of portals that exist only during the duration of an event. It would take some coordination, but I think they’d have plenty of cheap volunteers if they asked (I’d walk around taking pictures) Have them pop into existence at some of the more iconic booths and shops and fade away when the crowds are gone.

#ingress wins by collecting good data on attendees, Ren fair wins with additional ticket sales (I’d probably get a pass, which I’ve never done). Attendees win by having something else to do. It can even be tied in with a contest (net hours a portal is owned or whatever).

I don’t know if they have the ability to create portals with a timefence like that, but if not I hope they are developing it. State Fairs, Circus, Olympics, Car Races, there are any number of temporary events that can be cross promoted.

We feel we are now cautiously able to discuss an upcoming update to the #Ingress  scanner app. The new release is to contain glitch fixes, updated notification settings, and miscellaneous rendering improvements. We will notify you after we confirm this update is available.
